SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION WASHINGTON 23, D. C. McKEAN ISLAND Party landed here late the 24th in heavy surf. Had waited all day for surf to lessen before attempting the landing. Lost only minor items overboard although all equipment was soaking wet. Island literally covered with birds but a bright moon and clear sky made it very difficult to catch birds. Birds: 23 species were recorded of which 16 were nesting. 3617 birds of 13 12 species were banded.
