SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION WASHINGTON 25, D. C. CANTON ISLAND Party spent 24 hours here from late on the 22nd to late on the 23rd. Party covered all parts of the island at least once. Made contact with the British resident concerning our visit to the Phoenix Islands. Birds: 11 species recorded of which 4 were nesting. Heaviest concentrations of terns were on Spam Island. Banding: 37 birds of 4 species were banded. Mammals: Cats; abundant. Wild as well as pets. Dogs; at least 5 different pets Rats; four young removed from stomach of cat. Humans; 400-500 Almost half Americans and the other half Gilbertese. Reptiles: Skinks; - common Turtles - reported as common in lagoon, none found on beach.
