there was no Black-footed Albatross following it. At this point, no Black- footed Albatrosses are following us either. 1600--At this point, the sun is shining, as it has been all morning, and there are high scattered clouds. 1950--It is now too dark to count the number of birds crossing our bow. We are now apparently in the lee of the island, as the winds have dies down considerably and the white-caps, also. The trip today has been quite nice and calm, and the ship has rolled very little. There will be a full moon tonight, and it may be possible to spot birds which might happen to pass by. No Albatrosses have been spotted today. June 5, 1963--0633--Two Sooty Terns sighted off center of ship. 0645--Three Sooty Terns off center of ship. Due to the sea, we were unable to land on Nihoa all during today, although a rubber boat went in three times to check on the possibility of landing. During the day many birds flew around the ship, including Fairy Terns, which were quite numerous. These appeared to be nesting or roosting on the cliffs. These were on the northwest cliffs of the island, in the very center of the cliffs. Also many Blue-gray Noddies were around the ship, both species of Noddies. The Sooty Terns and Gray-backed Terns. We saw several flocks of Red-tailed Tropicbirds flying over, and also a very large flock of Frigatebirds, stayed around. Most of these were immatures. Only two females were seen throughout the day. Both Bulwer's Petrels and Christmas Island Petrels were quite numerous, especially just before dusk. 2015 Approximately 8:15 p.m. the chief boatswain's mate and several of the officer
