May 3 Mojave River, San Bernardino Co., Calif.
8 miles west of Lucerne Valley at the
southern tip of the Granite Mountains.
Here we saw or captured the following
(4 to 6 PM):
Crotalus mitchelli (2) Masticophis flagellum
Phrynosoma platyrhinos Crotaphytus wislizeni
Sceloporus magister Uta stansburiana
Sauromalus obesus Xantusia vigilis
Sage sparrow
Two of the cars left us at 6PM at
this site while those of us left
proceeded to Lucerne Valley, then
north toward Barstow. We took the
dirt road through Upper Lucerne Valley
to Stoddard Well, then north toward
the paved road to Barstow. About a
mile south of the paved road we stopped
to look for Gopherus agassizi. We
found two young ones and several holes
of others just as the sun set. Then
we tried night collecting on the paved
road from Barstow to Lucerne Valley.
No nocturnal animals were found, but
numerous diurnal animal remains were
found on the highway, as well as one
live Crotalus cerastes: Dipsosaurus dorsalis
Crotalus scutulatus Crotaphytus wislizeni
Uta gracilis Callisaurus draconoides
Phrynosoma platyrhinos
Near Lucerne Valley we saw a
