Mar. 29 Colorado and Mojave Deserts, Calif.
This morning at 10 A.M. Frank Vaske &
I started on a scheduled 5-day trip
through the Northern Colorado Desert
and most of the Mojave Desert as
far as Death Valley. The weather
was partly cloudy but fairly warm.
(Speedometer reading 2897) We drove
through Indio to Mecca, then through
Box Canyon in the Mecca Hills to
Desert Center. We went north toward
Rice from Desert Center, but off on
another road to cross Danby Dry
Lake. When we reached the Santa
Fe railroad tracks, we turned left
to parallel the tracks through
Chubbuck to Cadiz, then along the
highway to Amboy. After refueling,
we took a road toward Kelso from
highway 66 east of Amboy. We
camped for the night at 8:30 P.M.
about 4 miles north of highway 66.
(Speedometer reading: 3144.) Flowers
were growing in profusion about 8 miles
north of Desert Center. There were also
fairly abundant areas in Box Canyon
& just north of Danby Dry Lake.
Although a large number of lizard
tracks were seen near Desert Center,
no lizards were seen all day. Andalusian
warblers, phainopeplas, & mockingbirds were seen.
