March 15 Lake Merritt, Oakland, Alameda Co., Calif.
of 29 species in all. On the trip home
from Oakland to Modesto, Stanislaus County,
California, the following species were seen: Cliff
Swallow, Florida Gallinule, Red-winged Blackbird,
Western Meadowlark, Great Blue Heron,
California Shrike, and Western Mockingbird,
bringing the total for the day to 36 species.
March 29 Strawberry Canyon, U.C. Campus, Alameda Co., Calif.
At 8:15 A.M. we passed through grass-
land habitat, and then through a chaparral
habitat, where Perognathus is usually found
associated with Calif. Sage (Artemesia). Then we
passed into a border woodland habitat,
where white-footed mice + wood rats may be
found, as well as skunks + weasels. On a
return to the grassland habitat, a series
of mounds, denoting the workings of a
pocket gopher were found. A white -
footed mouse nest (?) was found about 6'
above the ground at the tip of a branch
of a pine tree. One acorn was found in the
nest, and since the nearest live oak was
about 75 yards away, it had been carried quite
a distance. The nest was composed of pine
needles, various grasses + some horse-hair.
Our route was from the north end of the
stadium up the hill above the stadium & the
road leading to the cyclotron, then south along
the road to Strawberry pool, + back to the
stadium on the south side of the canyon.
