Ludwig, James P. 1964 We arrived at Holua Cabin at 1230 and immediately sought out the beds after our 10 mile, five hour hike. By 1500 the cabin was largely socked in and it was raining steadily. The weather certainly has not been to our advantage. The cliffs behind this cabin will be accessible in dry weather, but tonight the rain will probably keep us off. March 29--The rain continued all night long and is still at it this morning. Last night I heard at 01955 light moaning of birds in their holes up the ridge (behind the cabin, and beyond (about 100 down the ridge to the west and up 200 yards). I did not hear any birds arriving. Apparently the Kona kept them from coming in. After checking the slope and finding it very slippery (the rain has loosened up many rocks) we decided to hike straight out. Damn weather. The hike out took two hours (0715 - 0915) and on it we noted at 7200 feet to 7400 foot level Apapane and Amahiki. There was no real tree cover, and few flowering bushes at this level. It rained most of the way out and we found the last 2.9 miles with a 1400 foot ascent fairly rough going. Stopped for a moment at the Park Headquarters, and then went down to lunch at Wailuku. In the afternoon we checked the Iao valley for White-tailed Tropicbirds and Drepanids, but found neither. It was raining there also. This Electra is the best of all possible planes and its very pleasing after the
