35 of the large intestine anterior to the oral cavity. Proba- ly in life the cestode was confined to the small intestine. Balls of cestodes occluded portions of the intestine for about the anterior 30-35 feet ( Total length of small intes- tine about 50 feet, large intestine 3 - 4 feet ). Proceeding anterior from the large intestine, the first cestode forms encountered were tiny larval forms with the same enlarged scolex. These were motile, and the bulk were moving anter- iorly up to the ilium where the adult forms were present. Proceeding further anterior I noted in the space of eight feet of the lower small intestine that all the forms from larval pleuroceroids to adult egg producing forms were present. Further anterior was solid adult worms in balls occluding to all solid foods the lumen of the gut. About 60 percent of this 30-35 feet of gut were so occluded. There also may have been a second cestode present which emptied its segments into the fecal stream and had exceptionally wide segments: This suggests some kind of Pseudophyllidean, perhaps a Dibothriocephalid. However, without a dissecting scope and proper stains I cannot be sure of this. Total cestode population probably stood in the range 50,000 - 100,000 worms, about 2/3 of this being small larval forms. A small amount of damage to the intestinal villus was noted, there being a few hemorrhagic spots pre- sent, but the adjustment of parasite and host seemed well made. The cestode niche in this animal is also saturated. To bed by midnight. 11-11-63 It continues to rain today, and we finished securing our gear for the inspection, and stored all of the samples preserved from the seal autopsy. I skinned the last frozen booby today, and now only one tropicbird with a broken wing remains as backlog to be done. Still raining in the after- noon and this keeps us from work with the gooneys. 11-12-63 Began today feeling terrible - headache, no energy, and my left thumb that I cut when working on the seal skin two days past was swollen and inflamed badly by last night, and by this AM after a nearly sleepless night the length of the hot infection had extended the whole length of the thumb. Began taking a tetracycline antibiotic, TAO, every six hours. Bill decided with this and the continued blackening of my eyes from the shutter
