P.L.gambeli. March 27, 1931 Pinole no. 3 41st and Clinton Pair with nest 100 ft N E of 1st nest of 1930 - soft. N of 2nd nest. Blanchard reports 6 naked young (1-3 days) nest in dead side limb - visible plainly from below. Adult flushed. Seen making repeated visits to nest. Bird came into car side of tree while at nest. Same degree of anxiety as last year. S.A.M. cool and cloudy. Apr 5 / 31 Pinole no 3. young partly covered with feathers. Parents came very close as Blanchard climbed to nest, one adult only was seen Pinole 3a - nest with 6 10 day old young in acacia or limbing of last year where bird was seen walking in puddle in field. One gent came fairly close and screeched, the other stayed on wire. Apr. 19. Pinole 3 - Young out of nest in acacia tree nearby I heard & leg. Seen also in old nest tree. Gave location notes - Could fly readily - tail 1/2 long.

Apr. 5/31 Prime 3a - nest found where bird bathed last year. 6 young. Same age as no 3 Apr. 19. - out in wide off with nest - all six of them. Fed by parent - different one each time or roughly so. Young fly from other young when they approach. Young fly to different parent. Still giving location screig. Are young feel too large an object crawled and lifted part n all of it out. adult did not pick it up. Young showing wings. Only one young fed at a time. Most. aggressive young tried to steal food from parent - aggression goes with hunger. Not sure that both parents are feeding. Only 1 adult brought insect - so it brought its most selected - caught in air by adult again delivered to young - successful. Young arrives - ducking head & hunting through leaves - pulls & tugs at leaves as if it were unfolded object. Young have headquarters than efforts not too while the are mostly but venture for a time away from from it. Always some of food here at headquarters.

Otocoris alpestris March 27, 1/2 mi W Pinoli. f taking dust bath in edge of a small pathway through the grass. Several times Squatting low and fluttered in dust - dust seen to rise from spot. Stood up and shook dust out of feathers. ♂ standing nearby during. behind. Another pair seen working through grass, Q 15 AM gathering dry grass until a large mound projected on either side of trail - ♀ only - ♂ accompanying - both flew 50 yds Q deposited grass - exact spot not located.

Mockingbird - Puddle no 3 (San Pedro 27 March, 1931. 8:45 am. two mocking birds in the gutter along grassy fields. Flew from tree to tree - one hopped along roof of car. One bird sang slightly but lady cold windy and cloudy. Pair stayed together. April 5/31 - Carrying sticks to place in acacia tree at 35th and Edward. One bird went to field while other flew to housetop and sang. Singing bird then accompanied "0" with a cry & nest. Both entering thick part of acacia near top. Nest not erected but but string in tree at the spot could be seen from street. 3 trips watched in course of about 10 min. Apr. 19/31 Two eggs - warm according to Blanchard. Bird not as near came near. Nest in good shape but a small nest. - One adult seen one block (second) pair away - sung occasionally - Flew are blocks further away from nest to flutter over and [illegible] from a cat. At this point I block only from point

where last year bird was singing & in unusual flight. Returned in 15 minutes to find workers at 36 again - near & when they chased cat I am bird flew up from dense tree to wire. The other sang a few notes from top of pole then flew to ground carrying large sticks to tree where other bird had come out. Not found - on open platform of twigs. Other pair 2 blocks or less distant than our within 50 yds of nest - so there are 2 nesting pairs.

Cliff swallow March 27, 1953; Pindle no 5. A flock of about 25 bathing in a pond while at the wing. The birds hit the water the full length of the breast and glided on surface - flapping wings several times before getting free from surface. Watch spluttered over back. All flock did this at once. Always flew into wind over the surface of the water so as to rise readily after each dip. - Ripples in water very pronounced - not to be confused with drouking.

Meadowlark - Pinole 1/2 mile W. March 27/31 Blanchard spotted a nest near roadside with 2 eggs, nest top of dry glass plainly visible at 15-20 feet. Eggs well hidden beneath. no birds seen or at nest.

May 14 - 1928 - 2 P. M from San Jose to Evergreen District along roads in car 7 shrikes in all seen - 3 pair . All seemingly adult. Nest near Evergreen in firme tree 7' up. 6 eggs birds seen to fly from "catch" on ground to nest tree. Nest located by means of flight into tree rather than to top. Both birds seen. One bird flushed as nest approached at 4'. One bird shot at - probably the bird not sitting ? Bird screeched at 70' on first flush. One egg inspected & returned. Later returned - bird flushed at 6's went off some distance without making cry . 2 eggs taken at once - 4 P. M. - Other bird not seen. Eggs preserved at 735 no. 1 & 745 no. 2. Both still alive - turned and twisted on yolk of no 2 seen to move limbs separately & rotted rapidly. Also general body twist. These movements started a few seconds after top of egg removed & exposed to air & light. Another nest - probably young left - though shrikes seen. 6' up in cypress - Jeff Butler near Evergreen All birds seen about. One seemingly went into wet tree May 15 / 28 - 3 single birds seen along roadways about Willits - Alviso etc. One sang at regular intervals , jerking tail with each trill.

Bird watched - soon joined by another - flew into trees in orchard & disoffered. Nest in blackberry hedge 4 1/2' up - 5 1/2' hedge. Birds seen feeding on top of tale- fluttering & wringe and giving young squeal. Nest found after that Bird flushed as walked along. Suffered grown young until this time - 6 eggs -. Female shot - 5 or dejection late - Male? had been shot once before and was very shy departing at double gun range after I had shot the female - 2 feet away #10 set taken at 11.30 author female shot at 11. 1.45 egg preserved - good size embryos still alive. 2 eggs left in nest - other three at about 3 o'clock were placed at around 97° F. 2 of these were somewhat warmed the hour previous. Returned to nest - near Evergreen at 8:30 - then approached with great caution as I found - no light near tree. as I was rising to meet a some limb was touched & bird left with the slight jar. 4 eggs ok 1 taken. Preserved at 9.30 - alive May 15 #11 one of eggs of set 2 preserved at 9.45 - had been in room though dead. - much white excrement in albumen. #12 other egg of set 2 preserved 3.40 may 16 of course dead. # 13/14.15 dead - too hot seemingly - preserved May 16 P.M. 2.00 √ 5.30 - #4 - still alive - 2.00 P.M taken from nest. Female killed. Male that had been shot (suffered by &) very shy and would not come within gun shot. Flew to nest after female had been shot but left at once

and could not be approached. must collected -with remaining 3 eggs. Bird & was sitting. Female with large breasts, pale bare. #4 Egg received at 5:38 still alive - had hen at room temp. Put on "incubator" at around 95°? F. May 17 #6 Alive at 10:45 received #5 dead - held for a little while. took bad eggs [illegible]

Melospiza melodia Dec. 8/1930 M.C. L.S.B. Mrs. E.R. Sumner Sr. liberated a song sparrow trapped in lower Strawberry Courts in the court of the building. He watched it for an hour as per attached sheet of notes. Previously banded & returned from experimental flat at court Dec. 9, 1930 At 8:30 a.m. the court was searched but no song sparrow was found. Sumner came at 9 a.m. with a second song sparrow which we liberated in middle south alcove it flew to second story widow ledge at east then to west and north court to window, then to ground in south court — here it pecked at band — a newly banded bird. Was chased S & N W east — back & SW then along ground into ferns of middle S where it fed on ground and ate seeds placed on ground. At 11:30 not seen in hurried walk through courts. At 2:30 located running from ferns in middle S. chased & north W

Song Sparrow liberated in M.V.G. Court 12:20 P.M. 12/8, near western entrance to court. Flew immediately at height of about 20 ft. to N.E. "L" of court, where it alighted on Second story window ledge on west side of "L." Almost immediately began to climb? building by fluttering upwards and clinging to rough projections of walls, and also to window projections. Reached window ledge of third floor at 12:25; remained there five minutes and then flew directly across L to window ledge on fourth floor of east side of court. Remained there, with occasional short flights to projection of window about two feet above, until 1:15, when it flew down to second story window ledge below, and about 40 ft. South. The last I saw of the sparrow, at 1:20, it was fluttering against the window panes, apparently trying to get inside. Bill Miller fed it in court?
