Dec. 14
We caught 17 mice in the traps and
placed them in the four compartments of the
large cage in groups of: 5, 5, 4, and 3; the four
dyes we mixed with the oats were all aniline dyes
in the following four colors: fast green, basic fuchsin,
gentian violet and methylene blue; we took blood
from one broken wing Sooty Tern; the 11:30
Mike boat took us to Johnston where we ate lunch,
borrowed a truck and surveyed the island; we found:
26 Golden Plovers, 24 Ruddy Turnstones, 6 Red-tailed Tropicbirds
and 1 Sanderling; returning from Johnston in
mid-afternoon on the VP we saw a Wedgetailed
Shearwater sitting on the water (undoubtedly hurt);
later in the afternoon we counted shorebirds
on Sand Island: 30 Golden Plovers, and 3 Ruddy
Turnstones; Sooty Terns are now sitting on
the ground at night in numbers from 5 to
7 thousand.
