Sept. 14 got up and counted toes on mice; got
word (from enlisted men, not C.O.) that they
were going to pick up and burn dead birds
at the other end; I went along and
sorted through the 200-250 birds (mostly juv.
Sooties) and took off about 100 bands; the
whole station going all out to clean up for
the Western Area inspectors on the 18th.
Sept. 15 checked mice in A.M. and caught
up on data recording; the spray truck
came over from Johnston and spread
DOT all over the island; late A.M. Caringi
came in saying there was a Pileated
Woodpecker on the causeway - this we had to
see - it turned out to be a Bristle-thighed
Curlew; I took several pictures with the
700 mm. lens. We went to Johnston in early
afternoon; Cam ran census and I inventoried boxes
for live bird shipment; called it a day on return
from the "hot, dusty hell" of Johnston; fed mice in
late P.M.
