Lehner, P. 1964 55 Sept. 5 up at 6:00 A.M. and went on a deep sea fishing trip with 7 other of the Coast Guard personnel; we went out with one of the two Navy recreational boats stationed on Johnston; Wally, Doyle and Browne had the chairs to begin with and Conners the left outrigger- J.L. the right; Wally got a strike within minutes after our being out; just as line was screaming off his reel, Browne and Doyle got strikes and then Conners; the line snapped immediately on Conner's pole, a few seconds later on Wally's; Doyle sat there amazed with the rod in its holder, a sandwich in one hand, a beer in the other and watched line scream off his smoking reel - all of a sudden bap! The line snapped, lashed back and caught him in the chops and almost made him spill his beer; Browne managed to land his, a tuna, which topped the scales at 129 lbs. (the largest this month); almost everyone landed at least one fish (I got a small tuna) before we returned at 1:00 P.M.; I got a lot of pictures during and after the trip - almost everyone got their picture taken with Browne's whopper to send home claiming they caught it; the skipper (Huey) relied almost solely on the birds to locate fish - we located Dolphin, Tuna and Bonita this way; we never got more than a mile from the reef - saw Brown and Red-footed Boobies, Sooty Terns, Fairy Terns, (over)
