Aug. 22 routine day except for a large head;
we ran all of our checks and set mouse
traps in great anticipation of catching more
big game; being Sat. night we decided to
go over to the "other side" (Johnston) and
play bingo; weren't enough going to take
the USCG VP so we had to wait for a
Mike boat - too late for bingo - Cam decided
not to go; Willie, Doc and myself went over
and met Chief Riggins and D.C. at the N.C.O.
club - met some of the pipe fitters and
plumbers, went to their shack for steak and
beer; spend many hours consuming - learned to
use chop sticks from King (Chinese plumber);
watched some of the gambling tables (Ace Away,
Craps and poker) - I've never seen so much
money change hands so fast for so long -
200 dollars a roll on the dice; we missed
the Mike boat coming back - spent a few
minutes at the Waikiki Club then Riggins
called for the Coast Guard VP; while waiting it
was decided we ought to return with a souvenir -
the large white propellor set in concrete and
surrounded by chains in front of the Navy office;
when the boat arrived Doc and Woody picked it up
and carried it to the boat the rest of us
formed shield between them and the office and
hoped they wouldn't be seen - they weren't; I
retrieve it.
