Lehner, P.

Jan. 16
did progress report for first half of Jan;
at 2230 we counted birds on the guywires and
got the following totals: Red-footed Boobies 1434,
and Great Frigatebirds 280; there are now
15 Gray-backed Tern eggs on the old pier.
Jan. 17
Grey-back eggs: 1 new and 2 destroyed for total
of 1 on the islet, and 3 new and 5 destroyed
for total of 13 on pier; there is one Great
Frigatebird egg on the islet; today I finished
the progress report and got it in the mail;
we tested both the moisture meter and
telethermometer today and found that they are
affected to an unpredictable degree by ground
current created by the LORAN tower; using a
Galvanometer the ground current read about 20ยต Amps,
enough to charge the gypsum block like a capacitor
such that no resistance is recorded at all - in fact
it records a minus resistance; we checked the
tele-thermometer with a regular mercurial
thermometer and found that it read higher - a
result, probably, of the current upon the
thermocouple; Binion and Norm tried dragging a
small sheet of cloth for ticks, but did not
pick any up.
