got up to start guywire census at 7:30 A.M.;
set out 5 sets (2 each) of the moisture blocks,
one on surface (denoted by red tape) and one
at the 6" depth (denoted by blue tape) -
the blocks are gypsum, designed to soak up
moisture and therefore change resistance -
a known current is fed into one side of
the block and a meter reads the resistance
in ohms or the % humidity; at 9:30 A.M.
a Christmas Island Shearwater was sitting
in some Portulaca near the concrete slab on
the east shore; Norm and Binion took 3
Berlese samples; there were 2 new Grey-back
eggs on the pier (total of 10) and a total of
2 on
the islet; there is also a new Frigate bird
egg on the islet; a Golden plover repeat
# 642-01170 was caught in the mist net;
we ran a shorebird count on Sand getting
the following figures: 83 Golden Plover, 44 Ruddy
Turnstones and 4 Wandering Tattlers; there
appears to be 5 Blue-faced Boobies using
the guywire bases.
