-4- Christmas Island Shearwater Only seven individuals were noted throughout the cruise, six of these on 7 June just NW of Kauai. Suprisingly none were noted near Laysan where a considerable population is presently nesting. Newell's Shearwater The vast majority of birds (346 total) were seen near Kauai. Three specimens were collected on 25 June just offshore. None of these were in breeding condition (one female had ova up to 2 mm). This small series might indicate that the species is not presently breeding. However, since members of this species apparently do not breed until 5 years of age, a large segment of the population will be composed of these subadult individuals. Hence a randomly collected small series might not include breeding birds. During all night observations within a few miles of Kauai (vicinity of the mouth of Waimea Canyon). Newell's Shearwaters were common until about midnight, after which none were seen until after sunrise. Juan Fernandez Petrel One sighting on 7 June west of Oahu was recorded. Although much more abundant during the previous fall, members were noted to decrease sharply upon nearing the main Hawaiian Islands and Leewards.
