1 Aug 81 Riverside Cala Reached here two days ago. Had a very hot journey across the Gympy Desert. Lost a horse in the middle of the Desert and by the merest chance another team having a spare horse overtook me, so I was able to hire it to come in with. Birds were very rare until I neared the mountains on the western edge of the Desert sometimes I saw more all day. I saw no Lophortyx gambel for the first hundred miles west of Gympy but they were common from "Walters" or for forty miles in a part of the desert below sea level. The first L. californicus was seen in the San Gorgonio
