Hylocomus pileatus ✓ Oct. 6 a ♂ Pileated Woodpecker comes regularly each day, usually in the morning to a knoll near camp where there are a number of old pines both standing and fallen. This far I have heard its vocal cry twice the long laugh which he utters quite as often when flying as when perched. This morning I called him to within 20 yds. by clapping my hollowed hands to so make a sound like that of his hammering on a rotten log. He alighted against a spruce and ran up keeping behind the trunk or peeking out at me. When he flew his wings, at each stroke, made a heavy whirring sound audible in the still air: 40 yds. away. This Woodpecker, unlike the smaller Pileatus, usually flaps his wings steadily like a Crow and has sometimes galleps Lake Umbagog, Maine. 1894 Ceophlaus pileatus August 27 ⅛ Upton this " 28 ⅜ Lakeside September 9 ⅝ Leonard's P. 10 ½ do.
