Pandion haliaetus carolinensis. 1896, Catching Suckers. Lake Umbagog. May 18. Lakeside. A pair of Ospreys haunt this end of the lake and are frequently in sight from the house. They are catching suckers chie-f- ly. Twice yesterday one of them flew past the house within 200 yds., carrying in its feet one of these large fish which seemed to be alive and slowly waving its tail from side to aide , although this movement may have been caused by the bird's flight. 1897, Lake Umbagog. May 26. Head of Great Island. At noon three Fish Hawks entered our cove and flew a- round it all whistling at once, making the wooded shores ring. To my ears this whistling call is even more musical than that of the Martin which it somewhat resembles. One of the birds carried a small fish in its talons, but neither of the other two attempted to molest it. An Eagle had just passed through the gut and out of sight when the Fish Hawks appeared. 119
