Dendragapus canadensis.
1897 Lake Umbagog.
May 29 A female seen by C. H. Waters among pasture stones at
the eastern and western end of the Sists (formerly Heyward)
farm near the Mansion. The bird was exceedingly tame and
Mr. Watkins was for upwards of an hour hoping that she
might go to her nest. But instead she remained in
practically one place occasionally pecking at the grass &
green leaves of plants, apparently feeding. At length he tried
to flush her but when he got within about 15 feet
she slowly walked in under the overhanging branches of a
shrub where she left him.
June 18 Fred Flint tells me that the Spruce Partridge has become
increasingly rare throughout the whole region of the upper
Megalloway as far, at least, as Lake Passadumkeag. It began
diminishing in numbers 12 or 15 years ago. He can suggest
no explanation of the fact.
1903
June 14 Alva Coolidge tells me that he has seen at least four
different Spruce Partridges (one of which was with
three mates) this season, most of them along the
track leading from Upton to B. Pond.
