Charadrius squatorola.
Lake Umbagog, Maine.
1394. Soon after breakfast Will discovered a solitary bird
Sept. 14. standing on an isolated rock off the point to the south of our
cove. I could not make it out through the glass so we launch-
ed a boat and paddled out to it. It proved to be a Black-
bellied Plover, a young bird. It kept running about on its
limited domain and appeared to be feeding. It took no appar-
ent notice of our approach and when we were within about thir-
ty yards I shot it.
