Charadrius helveticus.
Lake Umbagog, Maine.
1896. The (Black-bellied) Plover(which I saw across the Lake Sept. 14. on the marshes and flats), although a young bird, was exceedingly wild and restless, coursing over the whole marsh region, frequently alighting, but never remaining on the flats for more than a minute or two at a time. Sometimes he would go off high in the air towards the South until lost to sight and hearing, but in a few minutes he would return and again pitch down to the flats. Noticing that he paid frequent visits to the extreme point of land at the Outlet, I ran the canoe into a creek there and waited. Presently he came over me very high and flying very swiftly, but a charge of #4 shot brought him down.
