Harelda hyemalis.
MAINE, (L. Umbagog.)
Harelda glacialis.
1885
Oct. 17 Shot two in the lake near B. Point. Both
were young birds. They were very tame and
we paddled to within close range before they
seemed to alarm us when they suddenly stretched
up their necks and took wing - too late.
They looked small and very white & I at
first mistook them for Snow Geese.
Oct. 23 A flock of nine in the lake off Moll's Rock.
On the smooth water they looked many
white when their breasts were turned
towards us and I discovered them near
Harelda glacialis
Red Squaw
1889.
Maine, L. Umbagog.
A flock of six of these birds appeared in the Lake early on
the morning of Oct. 19th, alighting off the mouth of R. Brook Cove
I chased them about for several hours, but found it impossible to
get within gun-shot of them. In fact they invariably flew before
we were within two hundred yards. The early morning was calm, the
middle of the day somewhat windy, but the change of conditions
seemed to make no difference whatever in their habits. Through my
glass I distinctly saw that four of the flock were adult males.
The other two were either females or young birds. These were the
only examples of this species which I identified with certainty.
