Aythya collaris.
1889.
Maine, L. Umbagog.
Late in the afternoon September 19th we started a pair of
these Ducks from a shallow pond in the marsh near the outlet of
the lake. They rose within twenty yards of me and I had a good
view of them, seeing the gray Speculum so distinctly as to feel
perfectly sure of their identity. The male had a black head and
appeared to be an adult bird. Half an hour later they returned to
the same pond, but I failed to approach within gun-shot and did
not see them again. When we came upon them the last time I was so
placed in the boat that I could not use my gun without danger to my
companion who was rowing.

Aythya collaris
1894
September 25 - a flock of six
in Leonard's Pond. We
paddled to within 40 yds
when I could see that they
were on eggs & just so. I
shot & skinned one of the
ducks. These ducks flew very
swiftly in a compact bunch
like Teal. They were rather
tame for us, had no care.
They were sitting on the
nest at first but took
to the water as we approached.
