Larus a. smithsonianus. Lake Umbagog, Maine. 1896. Gulls have been unusually numerous about the Lake this Aug. 25. summer. Six of them were flying about off the point this af- ternoon making a great clamor. The sound of their wild, ring- ing voices carried me back to the experiences of last June and July in Penobscot Bay. I heard every one of their different calls this afternoon. Will Sargent says that they were still more numerous last evening and that he counted eleven in sight at one time. He also affirms that he has seen four occupied nests this season, three on B. Pond and one on Rapid River just above the old piers All were in trees, two on the tops of dead stubs, two on the branches of green pines. 64
