Larus argentatus. Lake Umbagog, Maine. Larus a. smithsonianus 1895- September. Although I did not see the Herring Gull at all this year Mr Sargent tells me that it has been unusually numerous during the last spring & summer. Within the last two or three years it has wholly abandoned its former custom of nesting on rocky islands (within its eggs were always on rocky islands) and now builds on bluffs. During the past spring he saw three nests, two at B. Pond, one at Richardson's Pond, all of which were placed on the tops of broken off bluffs 12 or 15 feet above the ground & water. The birds were sitting on all three nests & he does not think that any of them were disturbed. For confirmation of this statement I am referred to James Barnes who assured me that he saw Barnies also at B. Pond with both of the nests on them. The birds sitting on them. Lake Umbagog. 1896.
