Gavia lumme.
1890, October 20. Lake Umbagog. Off B Brook Cove.
While chasing the "Sea Ducks" in the afternoon Jim and I saw several Red-throated Loons. They flew about very freely and made a noise between the quack of a Duck and the honk of a Goose.
October 21. Lake Umbagog. Off B.Brook Cove.
A few moments later a Red-throated Loon came flying over the boat rather high. I fired at and brought it him down with a broken wing but he dove so nimbly and persistently that we finally gave it him up. I heard it do not moving off an mouth of B. Brook Cove when we find it diving in the lake and paddled up to it within for that gun range without difficulty. It proved to be a young female on which I had taken a fine shot.
