Gavia lumme.
Columbus septentrionalis.
1874.
Maine (Lake Umbagog).
Sept. 17. Saw a young bird in the middle of the lake. A heavy north-east storm gathering.
October 27, 1883. Found three loons of this species swimming in the water between B. Point and Great Island, this morning. They proved to be restless; they kept swimming hard which put me up to within long range of them when I killed one at about 60 yards, as they rose on wing. I afterwards shot another in the same.
Both birds (now in my collection) were young females.
