Jan.1886. Wm. Sargent tell me that a man having charge of the Middle
Dam camp found three Loons alive in the ice on Richardson Lake
about the Ist. of January. They seemed to be in perfectly healthy
condition but were easily caught for they could not rise from the
ice although they "flopped" along over its surface nearly as fast
as the men could run. He put two of them in a space of open water
just above the dam where they passed the greater part of the winter
but both finally disappeared. The third bird fought so savagely
that it had to be killed.
