"Diving at the flash"
1885
Oct 20 My guide stalked a loon to-day and got a
long shot at it from behind a rock. He did
suspected danger and was on the alert but sat
with its head, neck and entire back exposed. I
was standing so that I could take in the mirror
of the gun and its target without effort. Exactly
simultaneously with the puff of smoke the loon
cleft the water like a flash of lightning and
was gone before the first shot struck the surface
when it had been falling. The distance was
perhaps fifty yards - certainly not more; the
gun used a common buck-shooter.

A loon was shot at Middle Dam by Aldana Brooks
a few years since which had the whole of the lower
mandible cut off, presumably by a rifle ball. It was
cut off close to the feathers and the tongue was
hanging out. The injury had been evidently done
long before as the wounded member had
entirely healed.
A German Sergeant shot a large loon one which
had a good sized fish hook firmly fastened
in the roof of its mouth. The presumption is
that it took a live bait from a set line.
