Podiceps cornutus
MAINE, (L. Umbagog)
1885
Oct. 12 Abundant in the lake, singly oftener in twos,
occasionally threes together. They fish in deep
water usually a hundred yards or more from
shore, but sometimes when the shore is
bold and rocky, close in. They are mostly
rather tame and easily shot. When approached
they commonly dive and if hard pressed
take wing. Their dives are short and
they rarely double on an approaching boat
and as they always offer the entire head
and neck I have no difficulty in shooting
Columbus auritus.
