Colymbus auritus. Podiceps cornutus Lake Umbagog, Maine Oct. 18, 19, 1883 On both the 18th and 19th I saw numbers of these Grebes on Lake Umbagog. On the 19th I must have seen at least forty or fifty. They occurred singly, in pairs and threes, and in flocks sometimes numbering at least a dozen birds. They were invariably in deep water, often out near the middle of the Lake but sometimes in deep rocky coves or near bold rocky shores. They were rather shy & very hard to shoot. Often MAINE, (L. Umbagog.) Podiceps cornutus 1885 Oct. 12 Abundant in the Lake, singly often in twos, occasionally threes together. They fish in deep water usually a hundred yards or more from shore, but sometimes when the shore is bold and rocky, close in. They are mostly rather tame and easily shot. When approached they commonly dive and if hard pressed take wing. Their dives are short and they rarely double on an approaching boat and as they always expose the entire head and neck I have no difficulty in shooting 15
