Dendroeca tigrina
1871
May 30-June 10. Very common everywhere but especially among
tall pines. Song somewhat like that of D. castanea &
habits similar. It is rather more active however keeping
always near the tops of the tallest trees, occasionally
leaving out from thence in pursuit of insects. They had
a habit of sitting perfectly motionless on the topmost spicules
of some tall spruce or balsam for ten or fifteen minutes
at a time; hanging at regular intervals. At such times
they are very hard to see and when shot are almost
gone to lodge on the spreading branches beneath. The
females like the males always kept high up. We took
several which were about to lay and one shot June 9
had laid all but her last egg.
1872.
June 2. Numbers seen in Grafton Notch & thence to the lake.
" 3- Looked for among thickly-growing young pines where they
were feeding at the ends of the branches often only a few feet
above the ground. It was raining at the time.
" 6 Looked two or 4 or 5-7 in the same place as yesterday - raining.
