Acanthis linaria
Lesser Red Polla copy D
1889.
L. Umbagog, Maine.
First seen Oct. 16th; afterwards common in flocks of from five
to six to twenty-five or thirty. Like the Pine Linnets they fed
exclusively on the seeds of birches. They were generally dis-
tributed throughout the woods and did not appear to haunt any par-
ticular kind of ground. Among eight which I shot from one flock
were two adult males with rosy breasts. One of the birds shot at
this time was only slightly wounded, and being put in a cage fed
readily at once on bread crumbs as well as it did on birch seeds.
It was very tame and seemed to be contented with its lot.
27 Aegiothus lin Oct. 14 heard Lake Umbagog, Maine. 1890.
