7 May 1964 Kewai Waiman Canyon
Beach
Kilanea lighthouse 40.
We are awakened at 5:430 by calls of Newell's
Diving the canyon. We sleep near mine, but by
then the Jungle Fowl are calling, so we get up,
eat, to begin the ascent - it takes 2 hrs or 5
rest stops to climb out - what a battle - there were
times when we doubted we would make it..
On drive down, we see 3 Chicken Vultures. We
then head to a beach some 3 mi toward Kali coast
from Barking Sands - what a delight. 2 mi long,
cool water - fine, clean white sand, backed by
high dry scabby cliffs. As far as we can see in
every direction - no people. An hour in the surf
refreshes us after our exhausting climb.
At 1300 we head out to Kilanea Lighthouse.
The Red-footed Boobies nest here in great
abundance - calm & not at all warned by our
presence. The shallow beaches, cliffs, clear
water, & the boobies, frigate, & Wedgetails
are pictorially beautiful. The accessibility
is important. Moku gene should be visited -
perhaps houses Belcher.
The lighthouse keeps Newell's flying into the
light frequently - perhaps we can catch some for him -
he agrees to a proposal to do so.
At 1930 we climb about 8 miles head to
Kawailoa.
8 May 1964 - Picking uping material, generally
wound - down. activity.
