Wed 5 Aug 1947 Kokee - Alakai Swamp Trail. 37.
Wainoa Canyon.
Left Maggie to the lodge man at 7:00 and
started to the end of Makiki Cr. road. We hiked
directly to the cabin (5 min.) & this, in fact, the 1st
trail crew is busy clearing brush & logs - to bedro
pin. About a/4 hr. hike in. It is wilderness 1/2
way down trail before flora is really Ohio until tree
fern understory. The flat just past the cabin
is the most damaging piece of ground I've seen,
with the fern utterly stripped from tree fern,
egiphytes everywhere. Some huge tree fern grows
as epiphytes upon other trees. We saw the 5
common Boraceae species (no Amakiki) & heard what
was probably an OU! We failed to locate it.
Also heard many a new 10 M40 - breed
or endemic thrushes. (Phaeornis immanis)
We came out this evening, the round trip
being made in the day, round trip of 12-15 mi.
We ate a quick cold dinner of pineapple
juice, peppermint jelly & tomato, after
crossing stream & some trees on the trail.
Breakfast was cooked (a) to a crust. Feel
awfully well fed.
At 9:30 went looking for Neelely's land
both this to HARCORT's from Wainoa Canyon
overlook - Common - into the canyon!
Stayed last night with Maggie in her dorm -
sleepy. The people at the Xam Corp are either old
friends or most likely.
