I saw a large bird running along the ground some distance to the right. Riding toward it, it suddenly dis- appeared as though the ground had swallowed it while we were not more than twenty feet away when I saw a surprising looking mound of what appeared to be dirt. Looking more closely I saw it was the bustard flattened out on its short grass with its neck outstretched. When the bird saw we had discovered it she got up & ran slowly away. I find after with a x-g shot but she was too far & flew off. Clearly accidentally a female since these bustards are extremely wild will not allow a man nearer than 100 yards through a large bird managed to conceal herself completely in the short grass in a remarkable companion. I was a raw dark st. month Jan 26 Promise of rain when we were away. The carts got away about 7:30 and if I'd looked to vehicles to the east side of the road, riding along two animals with the hope that we might see antelope. Larren had told us that the plain we had crossed the day evening was the first place where we might reasonably expect to see antelope, & noted our range had seen 2 or running cars
