38 June 6 Friday Thanked Providence for our sleeping bags, it proved pretty during the night. The sun was warm though when we got up at 5 o'clock. We had a delicious breakfast of pancakes & bacon with syrup, started the car & got away at 8 o'clock. It was a perfect day with no wind & warm enough just to be pleasant. We were in the beautiful plain mostly by river & followed it all day. The grass was like velvet & the willows hung heavily but rank over in their first spring leaves of wild quince. I saw a demoiselle crane with a white & blue birds wing, it ran like a deer across the plain in the sunlight. We two climbed Taxidome & myself after it. Finally we heard it fly & I killed it with another 50 cranes were everywhere and a few moments later & shot a second. A big flock of swan geese had alighted on sand bar a yard or two away from them, even tho they were on the opposite side of the stream. We passed a crane walking about in the beach and it paid us the slightest attention & we came too near was only a few feet away.
