covers 14 folds: (it is considerably darker than) the sides of the body. From a point about opposite the navel the dark slate of the back shades off gradually into gray on the lower sides which covers the entire ventral line from the arms to the flukes. ventral portion from a little behind navel to the arms has there is a nar- row area of light pink. The sides of the body are covered with small elong spots (having rounded corners) which seem the compound of fine wavy lines radiating outward from a common center. as in this sketch: (I have noticed many sinigris markings on the Finbacks & Blue whales here, and on the Finbacks of Alaska & Vancouver Id. whether or not they are caused by a parasitic barrest yet determined.) There were also a great number of white scars on the sides of the body which were un- doubtedly produced by a parasite of some sort, as I found fresh pits, some partly healed, of others entirely so. In the fresh pits were granular membranes evidently left by the parasite when it was detached from its host. On the Finbacks & Blue whales the same pits and scars were found.
