Parula Ama. 1875. Aug. 31 Started immediately after breakfast and took a tramp with W. Stone into the swamp. I shot two Scth. sutcilla, a Miniotta variis a Vireo flav. [addt fin pl.] a Parula Ama. & a Nyctandra Gardenii. The latter bird was an adult moultting nearly all the wing feathers being new! It had only one plumm and the Steel blue of the back and crown was replaced by a dark lustreless plumbeous. The Parula was a young bird moulting pre- paratory to throwing out the full fall plumage. The Heron came flying silently up, as we were sitting together in the cool shade of the maple swamp, and lighted within about 40 yds. when I shot him with a heavy charge of No. 10. Polychoyncs orizorues is still with us in small numbers. Sept. 2 Clear and warm. Wind E. With W. Stone took the 9.30 boat for Long is. and shot thru all day returning at 6.1/2. Found specks very numerous on the hills and setting out our decoys we killed about 75 birds, between none of which 3 & fell to my aim. Nearly all of them were killed singly. Had a long film Minigites Professor's Gun on by E. Swan who picked it up dead. Saw a Hemerius Hudson, and one large plower. Among the specks we killed two O. minutilla, all the rest are & fusilla. Saw two Mac. grisen which were killed from a flock of a dozen that lit on the flats; both our animation birds. Saw also a single Otamus flairfus flying about.
