"Middlesex County, Mass. 63 1872 May 7-15- May. 7 Started at 4:30 and drove up to Wayland with Mr. Q. Westit & Mr. Carr, the former taking his two dogs. beat half a day but started only one Snipe which I shot; two were also seen in day on the Fresh Pond grounds the last of the season. At Concord previous to day J. O. Miller started about thirty birds in a gun. Vanns, He shot a single bird at the same place May 12. May 13 Started at 8 and drove fathers high up to Mr. Willington's place taking my gun, and beginning at the willows shoot all of the day stalking back. Made a very good bag of pigeons: a Cot. Henslowii, Mel. Perdicini, Bello Virgin., & D. cauculiscus, 3 My. fuscillus & 4 Orsacia ludovic. being among the best. Had a cool mild day and got home by 6 o'clock. 15 Last night took the train to Granville and met Henry H. at the depot. Mr. J. Sprague was with me this trip, & I was introduced. Found him a quiet reticent sort of man but pleasant enough without; he is apparently about 55 years of age, & very much out of health. He took us to a Hawk's nest but we found nothing in it. This morning Henry & I rose at 4 and started out coming back to breakfast at 8. At 9 started again & tramp'd till 6 when we had supper, & took the 7:20 train home. Made a very good bag my best being 2 Mel. Chrysol., 3 Pypen. dubis (12 &), 2 Orsacia ludovic., & 4 D. diversus & D. maculosa & some thirty - the common birds. Henry got a & Acip. fuscus & 2 Rapid. fusillus. Had a cool day though quite stormy at times, and enjoyed myself much.
