Putting my hand down among them they would nibble at my fingers and I found no difficulty in catching even large ones in my hand. Took the thinner at the outlet and found that she had struck a rock at Bottle Brook I was making badly. *Sproff* Swift was aboard & a gentleman in his party gave me a Red- Goriceps in very exquisite plumage. I think it is a young bird. Coming down the lake the wind blew almost a gale and to my surprise marily very soon that our Daws would run on wing easily at our approach. They tell me that it is impossible for them to swim in a dead calm. *Visando homewards* is still with us. At the outlet was very pure that I heard *Osiya Baird's* but may have been mistaken Sept. 4 Clear cool and a most brisky day. After breakfast took the Tyler road with S. and walked out to the farm. Found small birds very scater. In the larch marsh I shot a thrush & going in to pick him up came suddenly upon an old cock (Grouse) grouse). Standing on a little knoll amid a chorus of bench birds with *a* Gomband lighting up his dark plumage. He presented a most beautiful appearance. I looked at him several moments before shooting. Killed a & D. carmelcous & a few other worthless birds & came home meeting on the way from Donglas who gave me a fine g.g.s. *Peter's* hen which he had killed. Sports the P.M. m skimming the grass & the birds shot quite. The marsh is now nearly as dry as last year & heaves so, getting very abundant.
