120 Sept. 1873 1873 Wilton, Maine. Sept. 9. At the camp strolled down across the carry I riding Old Benney. Satning a boat at Cider Marsh we pulled down the lake as far as the outlet when we have taken aboard by the Diamond and reached the boat horn by 8.30. At the other I shot a merganser flying. At Richardson lake I noticed no striking difference in the air fauna except that birds & game of all kinds were scarcely seen. Paris Hudson was my want. My gun was full about, and we saw numbers of Blue, politarian, which I had noted at Wilton, as all gave a week time. Ducks and Geese the only species seen, Mergue and 2 both. circulators. A Drew Dickus was shot a day near the outlet of Umbagog. X Sept. 10. Ohm's a fine, cool day. After breakfast Dan I started up Camp. Near, making a lunch and spent the day in its beautiful forest shaded depths. At 3 o'clock ducks from a flock of six, in the first bayous, and further up we struck a flock of 60 mixed groups of which I shot five (one with my rifle). 2 to the remaining one. I also shot with my rifle a woodpecker, a long-fingered & a bit sandpiper, making amazingly good shots. Saw & Virginia Racastana, Bete fume & Gricea under us the latter I shot.
