276 July 1855— Petrovavski, Kamtschathas. Being present upon several occasions when the seine was hauled, I obtained three species of Salmon besides other kinds of fish, among which were examples of the Genera Oncorus? Morhua, Clupeus, Cottus, Meriutrister?, etc. The place, probably from the admixture of fresh water in the higher levels of the waters, is very barren in Invertebrata. At a search among the rocks and pebbles of beaches at low water I found scarce any thing but a Littorina and a Panamurus. A species of Echinus however was abundant in two or three fathom; and by dredging in deeper waters (10-16 f.) which the influence of the fresh waters did not reach, I got a considerable number of species, mostly Shrimps or Amphipods. A species of Pellina was abundant on the everywhere muddy bottom, the remaining shells consisting chiefly of species of Cardium, Nucula, Leda, and Mangelia. Considerable quantities of Eridendrium covered the bottom; the other radiata were an Ophiolpis and a Urester; and to complete the list I may mention two Crabs, a Hyas and a Pagurus. 277 July 1855— Kamtschatka. In my rambles on shore I shot a few land birds, and after a long search found a single species of Helix, which resembles most closely H. striolata of the U.S., like the Tasso species. Sea birds were not abundant about Petrovavski, with this exception of Gulls, so that I got no Ducks or divers here; notwithstanding the quantities seen from the mouth of the Bay. On the 13th we sailed, and having a tolerable breeze, succeeded in obtaining a good offing before night, when we were becalmed. Finding a depth of 20 fms., black sand I threw over the dredge, and took a fine large flounder, several flat sea-urchins, some ascidians, etc. We also threw over our cod lines and soon caught several fine Cod resembling those of the New England Coast, and weighing from six to 12 pounds. 14th N. lat. 52° 59' E. lon. 160° 00 Fine Wind S.W.
