We heard that the authorities had re-moved to Avatska, a town at the head of the bay; and our Commodore imme-diately opened communication with them. A day or two after our arrival a small number of Russians and Kamts-chatdals were seen in the town, em-ployed, or hoping to be employed, in sup-plying our wants, in the way of wood, water etc., and also peddling skus etc. The "Cosper" arrived here on the evening of the 8th and on the 9th the Ameri-can clipper "Levante" arrived. We enjoyed rather fine weather while here, the days were long, and quite warm, temp. averaging 67° in the day-time. Our crew were employed every day in catching salmon, which were so abundant here that we scarce ever caught less than 200 at a haul, and often secured as many as 350. These were good fish, all weighing from four to ten pounds. One was caught weighing 6lbs.
