78 Friday December 19 - 1913. Hal arrived here today. Jerome has been quite sick; something is wrong with his kidneys. Hal hurried home to see our first case of illness... It took me three days to get straightened out after the trip to Ellsmere Land. The tide gate had stiffed. I found Jerome with a high fever and tried to make him feel better. On the morning of the 16th Fat and Land started down the coast for a week of visiting. A boy has fallen on one of Mrs. Peps's steps and killed it. Saturday Dec. 20 - 1913 Hal and I are twisted around so that we are sleeping in the day time & up at nights. It is hard to keep straight when it is dark all of the time. Our house is now jammed full of esquimo's. She men that are to go with us must stay here to build this hoomuth and there is not room in the villages for them. The fresh water ice near the house is all gone and it must be brought from across the field by dog teams.
