front geese and sea pigeons. We had our first game meal today with bear and seal meat on the grill of fare. We went ashore and picked out a place to live in case we must stay here. They went up to the tip of Cape Chalen to look at the condition of the ice for Carrol to walrus hunting with ah-pe-lah and Elisheshe. Brought back two big ones and one baby. The latter was put into the boat. Getting the little walrus into the boat was good fun. He was bawling lustily on the float that supported his dead mother's body. We ran the boat close to the pot fed area and less of the 500 lb. child around his fat middle. Then came a terrible diving wrestling match. At last with a grunt the two escaped away and the walrus landed in a struggling heap at the bottom of the boat. On the way home the little fellow put his head on Elisheshe's knee and fell sound asleep. Monday Aug. 20, '13. Today we have gotten the dogs from dog Island. The boats were hoisted in and for the fourth & last time steered out towards Cape Sabine. The ice was more impossible than ever and we were forced to retreat.
