38 August. 23. 24 I stood watch on the bridge all night, part of the time in the bridge keeping an eye out for any change in the ice conditions. We drifted about continually, having been forced to leave the floe & which we were tied. There was a good lee behind a large floe to the northward of us and we could not have done better than to have remained there. Part of Nisberry continued to work the ships on towards Greenland, when I intimated that he was retrating without due cause he awoke the Captain and received his orders to continue working towards the Greenland coast. Just after this time was a bad squall followed by a fresh breeze from the SW. The Captain ordered that we return & took at once. We arrived there in the morning. This day went after seapits and Barnigans of which we obtained a good bag. Went after walrus after supper bringing on two. August 24. 19/8. Clear and cool. The Sound is blocked with ice.
