30 Wed. Aug. 13-1918. all day long we bagged coal filling each with approximately 100 lbs. this is to be landed for our use! Our first field ice was met during dinner time when the word came down from the barrel. it was loose pan ice and by 4 o clock we were into clear water again. We are rather dry and feel the shovel work in our backs and shoulders. Periville Bay Thursday Aug. 14-1918. It's again, and snows ahead forthwith bagged coal all morning then stripped and walked on deck although the temperature was only 26° above zero. Twice we scarcely escaped crashing into massive ice bergs of no known extent. The fog is a constant menace in those ice filled waters. All staff slept & we are cultivating hearts. We have seen coal and walrus today there are all signs of the northern land and hope so much to see.
