27 that this morning the Captain deemed it advisable to shift coal from the forward hatches aft in order to make the ship ride more easily. Several of us who were not feeling ill lent the crew a hand. I rolled a wheelbarrow all morning. It was a trickish job over the slippery heaving decks. This evening we were startled by the discovery that all of the great pile of lumber on the smoke pipe stands was working loose. All hands rushed to and pushed it down to the deck until only a bare half was left. This was lashed securely and left with a prayer that it stay with us. Should we lose this lumber we will be in bad straits for a shelter as we have no tarpaulins. Friday Aug 8. Continued rain and NW gale. Rolled our sailing dory under (it was at the foredeck) We saved it by boring a hole in its bot- tom. We are taking water still but the ship rides much better now that some of the coal has been shifted aft. Mac has moved up into the foreer boat with me; for he takes his room. We are still running at half speed on account of head seas and fog.
